"TV" is the default input option, not HDMI1

Hi,

on my TV (40HX723) there are lots of settings to fiddle with under 'HDMI Set-UP'. I'm sure that one of those will allow the TV to default to HDMI at start up. Mine defaults to the Scart input (which has a Virginmedia box connected) which is a pain. Haven't tried to change it though.

I really should read the manual; oh I forgot, Sony couldn't be bothered to provide one on a £1300 quid TV!

I remember reading about this when researching my own problem regarding 1080i/p switching (blanking the screen). In some sets it causes a momentary sound mute instead and should have been fixed via a firmware update by now?

Hi,

I have this TV but it doesn't seem to sufer from bleed. It does however have issues with slightly uneven LED backlighting. This is a feature od all LED lit serts to some degree and is fairly minimal on my set. I note that the 1st generation of LED TV's were fairly bad for this issue but this one is much better. I would rather they fix the issues with the Freeview HD tuner to be honest (1080i/p switching problem).

So yes, to answer your second question, Sony have lost the plot regarding QC. The technique now used seems to be 'let the customer reject the TV if he is not happy'. If they do not fix the 1080i/p switching issue soon I will be replacing mine with a non-Sony TV.

Hi,

sounds like a faulty ViginMedia remote to me. Is the TEXT button jammed down (so it keeps asking for TEXT) or did you spill something on it? One way to find out is to cover the end of the remote so it can't send any signal out (presume it is IR and not RF remote!). Also try removing the batteries to reset the remote.

Also, have you tried removing the mains from the VM box and restarting it? They sometimes get stuck in a mode and need a power down. Alternatively, ask them for a modern replacement (Samsung) box. It will probably be FOC.

Hi there,

It is great that Sony recognise the issue and should eventually do something about it. It appears they have fixed the issue for some models, but certainly not the 40HX723.

Default Text/Video optimisation for me out of the box, was set to Video - this is how I first noticed the issue. I only set it to Text after reading this forum as the recommended workround. Of course, Sony could have changed the default during one of the updates; which is a bit sneaky! Setting it to Text only minimises the problem though.

I will check the panel settings at the weekend but I do wonder why they could be different. Are they not set the same out of the box? I haven't changed any of those settings; I'm not even sure where they are. Bit of a faff having to do it while an appropriate mode (i or p) programme is transmitting though.

A quick test of this with the 'optimise for video/text' set to Video shows that the problem is as bad as ever. Watching the Simpsons on Freeview CH4HD today (just as a test!) and every scene change causes the blanking! Completely unwatchable.

I would like to know if it has worked for anyone else. I am on PKG3.904 which appeared on the 18th.

I will switch back to 'optimise for video/text' set to Text and report back as the problem was still visible in that mode previously. Maybe they have improved that...

Not fixed yet? That is a real disappointment. I have updated but not tested the issue yet on my 40HX723. As far as I know, the Full Pixel option is only something that you would need to connect a PC to the TV as it makes each PC pixel correspond to a screen pixel, thus avoiding blurring due to zooming. That used to be a feature worth looking for though as not all TVs have it. Consequently, some look terrible when connected to a PC.

Note that the 'optimise for text' mode is not a complete workround for the issue. The blanking period just gets a lot shorter (1 frame?) but is still very visible.

Thanks to everyone that has responded to this common problem. The latest update seems to offer hope but I haven't tried it yet.

With all due respect to Bravia55HX923, it is a Sony problem. i and p dynamic switching is part of the freeview spec. Not being able to handle the freeview spec is broken by design. All I can say is it is about time! I hope they have fixed the problem, not just improved performance, whatever that means. I will report back after the update.

I have owned this TV for 4 months now and was initially very happy with it. However, I discovered that Freeview HD channels are unwatchable due to the screen blanking for about half a second every now and then during programmes. This can vary from a few times per program to once every few seconds depending upon the programme.

From reading this forum, I discovered the 1080i/p firmware bug and used a workround that initially seemed to 'fix' the problem, by setting the video input setting optimisation to 'graphics' rather than the default 'video'. However, this workround does not seem to work as well anymore and rather than a half second interuption, the programmes all look like someone is walking in front of the camera every now and then; very off-putting! The i to p switch is still very visible and confimed by watching the 'info' banner at the same time.

After having taken so long to select the 'perfect' set in the first place, I am left rather disappointed with the TV. Despite the stunning picture quality, the TV is currently unfit for purpose and will be returned for a refund shortly if this is not fixed. When are Sony going to release a firmware fix for this, as they have done for other models? It affects several models in the range I believe. The TV is on the latest firmware, PKG3.807, which arrrived in December.

Are there any other workrounds that will fix this problem in the meantime?
