1. Yes, unless you are connecting something like a Sky box to it instead of using the in-built Freeview tuner.

2. No, an F connector is a screw fit. You need a standard TV coax aerial lead with push fit connectors. One end to fit the socket on the back of the TV and the other to fit the 'TV' socket on your wall faceplate, assuming the faceplate connector in your apartment connects back to an aerial somewhere.

See pages 5 and 31 of your Operating Instructions booklet.

If you mean KDL-32W5810, there are three sound modes you can select via the Settings>Sound menu. They are Dynamic, Standard, and Clear Voice. I should think Clear Voice is the one you want.

It's used if your network router is configured to use WPS (Wi-fi Protected Setup). WPS lets you use a push button or PIN instead of entering a network name (SSID) and wireless security details by hand. The PIN is either on a product label or perhaps on a utility screen for your router. The PIN is entered for either the router or for the wireless device that wants to join the network.

RSS Feed Widget

Works OK on my TV with an RSS Feed from my blog. You need to specify the full URL to an RSS Feed (you could try it on a computer first to test the feed is working and has some content for the Sony Wdget to display).

I don't think the DAV-DZ260 has ARC. I think the HDMI is audio OUT only, with audio IN via digital coax or digital optical cable.

I used to have a Sony LCD TV that didn't support ARC although my Sony Home Theatre system does. I used a combination of HDMI and optical cable and the sound was great. I've now upgraded to a new Sony TV that has ARC over HDMI and have removed the optical cable.

How do remove unused inputs from being highlighted onscreen?

A bit of a long shot, but pehaps there is electro magnetic radiation from the HDMI lead degrading certain UHF frequencies when you're using the audio return channel. Can you try re-routing the HDMI lead so that it doesn't pass near the aerial lead, or try an HDMI lead from a different manufacturer, ideally one that meets v1.4 specification?

Have you checked to see if the TV has the latest firmware version loaded? Applying the latest version might not fix the problem but I think it would be worth a try.

Hi Shaun,

Hmm... If you've removed all external connections from the amp and switched it off and back on and the Protect message still flashes then it does point to a fault with the internal circuitry somewhere, but that's as much as I know.

As to whether is worthwhile fixing, you'll have to do some research and find out the likely cost of an investigation and repair and compare that to the cost of replacing the amp with something new that meets your needs.

Hmm.. in your post of 31-May-2011 @ 16:55 you say that the PVR is connected to the TV with a Scart cable, and the DVD recorder is connected to the TV with both a Scart and an HDMI.

I assumed that a Scart goes from the 'TV Out' socket on the back of the PVR to the TV (and therefore sends its output direct to TV) whilst another Scart goes from a socket marked something like VCR/DVD on the back of the PVR to the input on the back of the recorder, so that you can transfer some PVR recordings onto DVD.

Anyway, it's a bit tricky to work it all out sitting here without everything in front of me, but it seems as though you've got everything working the way you want it now, so it's just a case of sitting back and enjoying your home cinema .

As you now have a digital HDMI cable from DVD to surround sound you can remove the analogue Scart cable from DVD to TV.

Leave the cable from PVR to DVD in case you want to record something off the PVR onto a DVD.

Yes, leave the coax aerial leads as they are.

I was suggesting an optical (S/PDIF) cable so that sound from TV programmes will output through the surround sound speakers. No settings needed as the TV will output sound through the S/PDIF port automatically. If, however, you have a modern TV with ARC (Audio Return Channel) on its HDMI output, then the optical cable won't be needed. See if this helps - http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/arc.aspx

On my system I have chosen the ProLogic II Movie sound field for watching TV programmes or my Scart connected PVR. I have chosen AFD STD for watching Blu-ray DVD's. The surround sound system automatically switches between the two chosen sound fields depending on the input being fed to it.

I should have thought the ProLogic II Movie sound field would be fine for your Freeview HD programmes.

You don't say what outputs are on the back of your DVD or TV.

If possible, I would connect the output of the DVD to the input on the surround sound with an HDMI lead (and not by SCART to the TV), then take another HDMI lead from the output of the surround sound to an input on the TV.

Assuming your TV has an optical audio out socket, take an optical cable from the TV to the optical input on the surround sound.

When listening to a TV programme, the suround sound screen will show 'TV' and I would use a Dolby ProLogic II sound field. For DVD playback I would use AFD STD sound field.

I think that should work OK.

You haven't said what TV you've got, but from what you've described I'm guessing it doesn't support ARC (Audio Return Channel) on its HDMI sockets.

The TV will probably have an optical audio out socket on the back though. If so, in addition to the HDMI cable from the HTA-S5 to TV, you'll need to connect an optical cable from TV to the HTA-S5 optical input and select a Dolby ProLogic II sound field to get the TV sound across all 6 speakers.

Yeah that's the problem when we're fitting home surround sound into an everyday living space.

Dolby Laboratories' tip on subwoofer placement is to temporarily place the sub at your seated position, then play some bass heavy content and walk around the room until you hear the best bass sound. Move the sub to that positon in the room as its permanent location. That's an interesting tip, although it wouldn't be practical in my living room layout, it might in yours.

Another factor is what the sub is standing on; whether it's coupled or isolated from a wooden floor etc. I have mine sitting on a bit of granite, but you could experiment.

There's a fair bit of info available on the web if you search for something like 'subwoofer placement'. I would say not to get too hung-up on the experts 'correct' placement and levels though, it's all about what works best for you in your room.

On the page you quote it says to go into the Test Tone setting and select ON so you hear a tone from each speaker.

Then you use the up & down arrow keys on the remote to select each speaker in turn until you get to the subwoofer, then use the right arrow key to display the current level, then the up & down keys to adjust the level, then the middle key to confirm desired level, then you turn off the Test Tone setting.

If turning down the level of the subwoofer doesn't help you achieve a sound you're comfortable with, you might find moving the sub within the room will help, e.g. having it in the corner of a room may cause it to sound boomy.

With a stereo soundrack the sound comprises of only two channels - one for the right speaker and one for the left. What Dolby ProLogic does is take hidden audio cues that exist in the stereo content and manufactures a realistic surround sound by splitting up the sound around the other speakers in your system. You could use this sound field to improve the sound from a stereo broadcast TV programme for instance.

Dolby Digital is an encoding/decoding technology that faithfully reproduces sound as it was originally recorded, first developed for multichannel cinema sound.

Unlike stereo, in a Dolby Digital 5.1-channel environment, there are five full-range and discrete channels plus a sixth channel for deep bass sound. The Left and Right channels primarily reproduce musical swells and accurately communicate movement across the screen in front of you. The Centre channel mainly reproduces dialogue, focusing it on the screen. The two surround channels (Left Surround and Right Surround) envelop you in background sound, and the Low-Frequency Effects (LFE) channel delivers the deep, powerful bass effects from your subwoofer.

If you set your sound field to Sony A.F.D STD when watching Blu-ray discs, you should get the sound as it was intended to be heard.
