Hi all, new to the forum hope somebody may be able to help!!!

my vgc-la1 has screen has started fading in and out of colour and is distorted, it just done it all of a sudden, no previous problems. it does it right from the moment i switch it on, will slowly go grey through to black and then nothing. sometimes the screensaver video kicks in but it is all different colours.

does anyone know what the problem could be?

Thanks!!

    Hi TOMMTBOY82,

Screen fading and then turning black could indicate an inverter problem, but combined with distorted video this is more likely a graphics chip problem or the LCD screen itself. To rule out a driver problem try booting in safe mode (tap F8 at boot) - is the same problem evident?

What you describe sounds like an un-even backlight, which is, usually, a sign of a failing CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp).  There is a possibility that the inverter is causing the issue though and since it is the less expensive and easiest to replace, I would suggest trying that first.

A loose connection to the inverter wouldn't usually cause an issue like this.
