it has been raised many times this question, and i have found that Sony have in the past recommended the western digital my book drives which of coarse are powered drives, and since that drive is mentioned in the link you provided that in my view is a far better quality drive,

the other question you raised about which USB port, if you are going to use this drive or any other for recording its best placed in USB 1, which is the correct one for the job.

the other point i should raise is that your tv will probably want to register the drive to the tv, please remember that once you do you will not be able to use the drive for anything else other than to record and view images from the tv to which it was registered.
