S-Cinetone colour, developed for Sony’s acclaimed FX9, is the default look on the FX6. Precisely tuned to meet the requirements of today’s content creators with rich colour and natural skin tones, it produces fresh and vivid images straight out of camera without grading, while retaining plenty of latitude for post production.
The full-frame, back-illuminated, 10.2-megapixel Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor offers impressive light-gathering capability. Fast readout speeds and a dynamic range of 15+ stops deliver superb image quality with wide sensitivity and reduced noise.
The BIONZ XR image processing engine matches the sensor’s high-speed readout with enormous processing power. Built with a future-oriented architecture, it delivers high quality images faster and dramatically improves camera interface responsiveness.
At its base sensitivity of ISO800, the FX6 offers optimal dynamic range for well-lit interiors and outdoor documentary shooting. An enhanced ISO 12800 sensitivity is designed for challenging low-light, morning and evening shots. The FX6 offers an exceptional 15+ stops of dynamic range ‒ beyond the perception of even the human eye in many conditions ‒ allowing for unprecedented creative freedom in colour grading and post.
The wide-area AF uses intelligent tracking and on-sensor phase-detection for tenacious subject tracking across almost the entire frame (627-point focal plane phase-detection AF covers approx. 89% of the image area). The hybrid AF system delivers precise focusing even when shooting at shallow depths of field and at 120p high frame rates in 4K (QFHD).
Real-time Eye AF and Face Detection ensure accurate, stable focus acquisition for interviews, events, and anywhere where precise focus on people is essential. Sophisticated real-time processing realises pinpoint eye focus even when subjects are looking down or up at steep angles, allowing the operator to concentrate fully on composing the best shot.
With AF Transition Speed selectable over 7 levels, and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity over 5 levels, you can better convey your creative intentions when switching subjects or, for example, rack focusing.
When the AF Assist function is ON, rotating the focus ring instantly switches from autofocus to manual focus so that a different subject can be quickly selected. Autofocus operation resumes as soon as the user stops rotating the lens focus ring.
For auto focus, you can set the target area among Flexible Spot, Zone, Wide and change the position of the target area quickly during shooting by simply touching the LCD monitor.
High Frame Rate shots can turn everyday action into a visual feast of elegant movement. The FX6 captures up to 120 frames per second (fps) at the 4K (QFHD) resolution. Slow and Quick (S&Q) modes give you full control over the captured frame rate from 1 to 120fps, allowing precise motion narratives, and up to a beautiful 5x Super Slow Motion (24fps output).

Learn the four unique advantages of using Sony's E-mount lens for video shooting. The combination of Sony's lenses and cameras will enhance your video creation experience.
The FX6 features Sony’s unique built-in electronic Variable Neutral Density (ND) filter. Unlike conventional optical ND Filters, the electronic ND Filter on the FX6 can be controlled from 1/4ND to 1/128ND linearly, or set to auto. Ideal in changeable environments, there’s no need to change filters as lighting conditions change or to maintain your depth of field.

Despite its amazingly light 0.89kg body, the magnesium-alloy FX6 is more than tough enough for the rigours of real-world shooting. A detachable Smart Grip puts key functions at your fingertips and is easily adjustable with a single button.
Ideal for low angle shooting, the smart handle is part of the FX6’s modular design. It’s easy to reconfigure for any application, including mounting in a gimbal, drone, or underwater housing.
To perform reliably in challenging environments, the main body, covers and top handle are made from a production-tested, lightweight magnesium alloy. The main frame achieves high strength and durability with minimum weight in order to maximise mobility.
The custom ventilation system and chassis design help to prevent the thermal shut down of shooting at high frame rates and 4K (QFHD) resolutions. The number of heat sinks, the shape of air intakes and exhaust vents as well as the location of the low-noise fan, and airflow paths have all been calculated with precision to ensure that optimum ventilation is achieved.
Record right on the camera with the amazing richness of 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 colour sampling, for far greater flexibility in image grading, post-processing and compositing.
As well as Long GOP, internal All-Intra encoding is now provided. This encodes every frame independently at bitrates up to 600Mbps, to capture complex motion more accurately, and allow more efficient editing workflows.

For demanding post-production workflows, 16-bit RAW output is available via SDI connection to compatible external recorders while XAVC-I files are simultaneously captured in-camera. RAW video output is 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 data from the image sensor with a choice of 120 / 100 / 59.94 / 50 / 29.97 / 25 / 24 / 23.98 frame rates.
The FX6 offers shooting modes with preset looks like S-Cinetone that produce great-looking shots in-camera, or S-Log3 / S-Gamut3 with Cine-EI mode that capture perfectly-exposed images for post production.
Four preset scene file types are available for SDR shooting (S-Cinetone, Standard, Still, ITU709) and two for HDR (HLG Live, HLG Natural) plus 16 slots for imported user 3D LUTs for your preferred look without post production.
Sony’s ergonomic Smart Grip and Smart Handle feature easy one-button adjustment. With zoom, record, and assignable control buttons, as well as a dial suitable for iris control, you can comfortably operate for hours.
A wide range of professional interfaces is available including 12G-SDI and HDMI outputs, a remote interface, TC connectors for multi-camera sync, and SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps (USB 3.2) to support fluid data workflows.
Sony’s Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe provides power, signal and switching connections to compatible Sony accessories, including for example wireless microphone systems such as the UWP-D21 or UWP-D22.
Four-channel audio input allows simultaneous capture of external microphones and the built-in microphone. UWP wireless microphones or XLR audio adaptors such as the XLR-K3M can also be used with the MI Shoe.
The handle of the FX6 has two independent audio inputs, easy-access XLR connectors to connect external professional microphones. UWP series wireless microphones may also be connected via the MI Shoe.
The 3.5-inch LCD screen allows precise manual focusing in challenging shooting conditions. Flexible positioning of both mounting locations and angles allows comfortable shooting to suit varied preferences and rigging.
The LCD screen has a quick access control menu. With a single touch, you can change codec, imager scan mode, picture size and frequency, base ISO/sensitivity, shooting mode and audio levels.
Dual media slots support CFexpress Type A cards, along with conventional SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II cards, for fast buffer clearance and data management. Simultaneous, relay, interval and proxy modes are supported.
Wi-Fi® connectivity enables a host of advanced wireless production features such as remote control via smartphones or tablets and the Content Browser Mobile app. Connect easily with either NFC one-touch or manual pairing.
The FX6 records three types of metadata: image stabilisation, clip flag, and camera rotation. These can be useful when previewing and preparing to edit in Sony’s free Catalyst Browse or cost-effective Catalyst Prepare software.
