Preparation

Check the firmware version

If the firmware of your WF-1000XM3 is version "1.3.0" or above, you do not need to perform the update.
If you're not sure, it's easy to check which version of firmware you have:

  1. Launch the "Sony | Headphones Connect" application.
  2. Connect your WF-1000XM3 to the "Sony | Headphones Connect" application.
  3. Tap the three dots (menu button) in the upper right corner.
  4. Select the Version of your device shown in the Menu. This item is shown only when the device is connected.
  5. Confirm the WF-1000XM3 firmware version.

Important notice

  • DO NOT power off the device

    DO NOT tap the power button .

    When updating the WF-1000XM3 when you are not wearing it, set the "Automatic power off function" (power off the function when it is not worn) to "Do not turn off".
    Change the settings from (Off when headphones are taken off) to (Do not turn off).

  • DO NOT perform the update in a location where the Wi-Fi signal is inconsistent, such as:
    - on a train/in a place where Wi-Fi signals become congested
    - near a microwave, cordless phone or any other devices that use the 2.4 GHz band frequency radio waves
  • Make sure both devices (Android/iOS device and WF-1000XM3) are fully charged.
  • Disconnect all other Bluetooth devices such as wearable devices or smart watches from your Android/iOS device before starting the update.

Before you upgrade

  • Once updated, the firmware cannot be reverted to an earlier version.
  • For Android devices, the update process will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. (The file size is about 934 KB)
    For iOS devices, the update process will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. (The file size is about 934 KB)
  • Depending on the radio wave environment and your Android/iOS device, it may take longer to complete.
  • To update these headphones, follow the procedure below: but when the "Automatic download of software" setting is enabled on "Sony | Headphones Connect" (this is the factory default setting), download and transfer of update software will happen automatically.
    • Download data from the server to the iOS device or the Android device.
    • Transfer data from the iOS device or the Android device to the headphones. (You can use WF-1000XM3 normally while the transfer is going on in the background, but the Google Assistant cannot be used while the transfer is going on.)
    • Execute update with the headphones.

Download & Install

To update these headphones, follow the procedure below:
  • Download data from the server to the iOS device or the Android device.
  • Transfer data from the iOS device or the Android device to the headphones.
  • Execute update with the headphones.

Step 1: Install the update

  1. Launch the "Sony | Headphones Connect" application.
  2. Connect your WF-1000XM3 to the "Sony | Headphones Connect" application.
    • If you have never connected to the "Sony | Headphones Connect" application before, follow the instructions on the screen to connect the headphones to your Android device.
    • If you have connected to the "Sony | Headphones Connect" application before, select your headphones.
  3. When the "Automatic download of software" setting is enabled on "Sony | Headphones Connect" (this is the factory default setting), download and transfer of update software will start automatically.

    The download and the transfer will start. Once they are complete, the next screen will be automatically displayed.

    However, if you have disabled the "Automatic download of software" setting on "Sony | Headphones Connect", download and transfer of update software will NOT start automatically. Follow the procedure below:

    1. The following screen will be shown when the connection has been established. Please make sure that both Rch and Lch of the WF-1000XM3 are connected.
    2. If an update is applicable, "The latest headphones software is available." will be displayed and you can press "More info".
    3. Go to the "Update Software" screen. Make sure "Version 1.3.0" is displayed and press "START"(for Android)/ "Start"(for iOS).
    4. The download and the transfer will start. Once they are complete, the next screen will be automatically displayed.

    NOTE:
    If "Switching software transfer destination…" is displayed, you do not need to do anything and should just wait. A few seconds later, the previous screen will be displayed again.

  4. Update the headphones software. will be displayed and you can press "More info".
  5. Go to the "Update Software" screen. Make sure that "Version 1.3.0" is displayed and press "START" (Android)/"Start" (iOS).
  6. The update will take a few minutes.

    NOTE:
    During the update, WF-1000XM3 will turn off automatically. Please wait until it automatically turns back on and reconnects with the Android/iOS device via Bluetooth, after which the update will be complete.

  7. When the software update is completed, press "OK".
    If the screen is not displayed, check whether the version has been upgraded in the following step.

Step 2: Check the update was successful

After the update, confirm that the new version has been installed successfully by following the steps in the [Check the firmware version] section.
If the firmware version shown is "1.3.0", the upgrade was successful.

Questions & Answers

An update error message appears.

  1. Press "OK".
  2. Restart WF-1000XM3 (insert the headphones into the case and then remove them from the case).
  3. After that, restart "Sony | Headphones Connect" and update again

Even though the update failed during the process, check the firmware version. If the Version is shown as 1.3.0, the firmware update was successful. If not, try the firmware update again. You can check the Version from the setting in the "Sony | Headphones Connect" application. To find out how to check the version, go to the "Check the firmware version" on this page.
