About this upgrade (15/12/2011)

Thank you for your continued interest in Sony products.

Sony is always concerned about quality and customer satisfaction and therefore is offering a firmware upgrade for Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera NEX-5. Please refer to the "Download and Installation" section of this page on how to download and install the firmware upgrade.

Important:

If you have any issue with the firmware upgrade, please contact Sony.



Confirm the firmware version of your camera

Follow the instructions below to check the firmware version of your camera.

  • If the firmware version of NEX-5 is Ver.05 or later, the upgrade is not required.
  1. Select Menu --> Setup --> Version on the camera.
  2. The firmware version is displayed as illustrated below.

Applicable Models

  • NEX-5 with firmware Ver.04 or lower

Improvements

This utility upgrades the NEX-5 firmware to version 05, and provides the following benefits:

  • Compatibility with Mount Adaptor "LA-EA2".


Note: "Face Detection"and "Smile Shutter" functions do not work when using "LA-EA2" Mount Adaptor.

Benefits provided by previous upgrade program (Ver.04) and included in version 05.

  • Addition of the [Picture Effect] function.
  • Addition of the [Peaking] function in manual focus mode.

Benefits provided by previous upgrade program (Ver.03) and included in version 04.

  • Addition of the function to customize soft keys.
    It is now possible to customise the functions of two soft keys mounted on the camera's rear panel.
  • Addition of the [Menu start] function.
    When 'Menu' is selected, there is now the option to display either the main menu screen or the last parameter set.
  • Improvement of the operability of the [MF Assist] function
    An enlarged image portion can now be displayed on screen with user-selectable duration while in MF (Manual Focus) Assist mode. MF Assist operation has also been improved.
  • Improvement of the operability of menu item selection
    The menu operation has been simplified.
  • Maintaining the aperture setting in the movie recording mode
    HD video can now be shot while maintaining a constant aperture setting.
  • Support for the autofocus function with A-mount lenses
    Important note: If you use α lenses in combination with your camera using the LA-EA1 Mount Adaptor, please update the LA-EA1 Mount Adaptor. Click here to access the LA-EA1 firmware download page.
  • Enlarging the image when [Release w/o Lens] is set to [Enable]

Benefits provided by previous upgrade program (Ver.02) and included in version 04.

  • 3D Sweep Panorama function has been added;
  • Improvement of 'normal' 2D Sweep Panorama shooting;
  • Decreased power drain when the camera is switched off;
  • Quicker start-up in low-light conditions.


System Requirements

  • Computer hardware
    • Hard disk space: 200MB or more
    • RAM: 512MB or more
  • Power source for the camera
    • Fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50
      or
      AC adapter AC-PW20 (sold separately)

      Note: The upgrade can be performed only when the remaining battery level is (three marks) or more. We recommend that you use a fully charged battery or the AC adapter AC-PW20 (sold separately).
  • USB cable supplied with the camera

    Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.

Install

Important notes:

  • When performing the firmware upgrade, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or the AC adapter AC-PW20 (sold separately).
  • Do not remove the battery or AC adapter during the upgrade; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.

Step 1: download the firmware upgrader

  1. Make sure that you are logged on as a user with administrative rights.
  2. After reading the disclaimer, click the [Download] button below.
  3. The download of the [NEX-5V5_Update1112a.exe] file (63.5MB (66 670 224 bytes)) will start.
  4. Save the file to the desktop of your computer (recommended).

Step 2: upgrade the firmware of your camera

  1. Close all currently running programs on your computer.
  2. Double-click the [NEX-5V5_Update1112a.exe] file you downloaded to start up the Firmware Updater.


    The Firmware Updater window appears.

  3. According to the instruction on the Firmware Updater window, select Menu --> Setup --> USB Connection on the camera, and check if Mass Storage is selected.
    If another mode than Mass Storage is selected, please select Mass Storage.



  4. Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    Note: When the camera is connected to the computer, the LCD screen of the camera turns off. Please proceed to the next step.
  5. Confirm the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is displayed on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen.
    Note: If is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
  6. After confirming the above, click Next on the Firmware Updater window. Figure 1 appears on the Firmware Updater window, and Figure 2 appears on the LCD screen of the camera.
    Note: From now on, never turn off the camera until the firmware upgrade is completed.

  7. After confirming the screens on Figures 1 and 2, click Next. The current version and the version after the upgrade appear on the lower left part of the screen. (Figure 3)
  8. After confirming the screen on Figure 3, click Next.
    Note: Current version should be Ver.1 or Ver.2 or Ver.3 or Ver.4.
    If the screen on Figure 4 appears, the upgrade is not required. According to the message, stop the USB connection and click Finish. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the camera.

  9. Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen to stop the USB connection, as instructed on figure 5.
    Note: Please keep the USB cable connected even after stopping the USB connection on the computer with the above operation.
    Note: If is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.

  10. Press the center of the control wheel to execute the reset of the camera.


    Note: The screen turns off when the center of the control wheel is pressed. Please proceed to the next step.

  11. Click Next on the Firmware Updater window.
  12. After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the screen on Figure 6 appears.
  13. Click Run to start the upgrade. The progress bar appears while upgrading (approximately 5 minutes).
    Note: Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while upgrading.

  14. When the upgrade is completed, the screen on Figure 7 appears. Click Finish and disconnect the USB cable.

  15. Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the camera.

Step 3: Confirm the firmware version of your camera is Ver.05.

  1. Select Menu --> Setup --> Version on the camera.
  2. The firmware version is displayed as illustrated below.

Step 4: Download the manuals describing the new available functions and how to use them.

All the new functions detailed in the below manuals are included in this firmware upgrade (Ver.05.).
