System Requirements
Your firmware may already be up to date, especially if you have a new NEX-F3 camera model. If the version number is 1.01 or higher, you do not need to update.
If you're not sure, it's easy to check which version of firmware you have:
- On the camera select Menu --> Setup --> Version.
- The firmware version is displayed as illustrated below.
If the firmware version of NEX-F3 is 1.01 or later, the update is not required.
Install
What you need
- Computer hardware
- Hard disk space: 200MB or more
- RAM: 512MB or more
- Power source for the camera
- Fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or AC adapter AC-PW20 (sold separately)
Note: The update can be performed only when the remaining battery level is(three marks) or more. We recommend that you use a fully charged battery or the AC adapter AC-PW20 (sold separately).
- Fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or AC adapter AC-PW20 (sold separately)
- USB cable supplied with the camera
Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
How to make sure the update goes smoothly
- When performing the firmware update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or the AC adapter AC-PW20 (sold separately).
- Do not remove the battery or AC adapter during the update; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
- Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
- When using an A-mount lens with the LA-EA2 Mount Adaptor (sold separately) and setting to use the [AF Micro Adj.] function, the registered value is resetted.
Download and Install the update
- Step 1: Download the Firmware Updater
- Step 2: Update the firmware of your camera
- Step 3: Confirm the firmware version of your camera is Ver 1.01.
Step 1: Download the Firmware Updater
- Make sure that you are logged on as a user with administrative rights.
- After reading the disclaimer, click the [Download] button below.
- The download of the [Update_NEXF3V101.exe] file (69.8MB (73 263 136 bytes)) will start.
- Save the file on your computer.
Note for windows 8 users:
Under the initial settings of Internet Explorer, the update file will be saved in the [Downloads] folder. Click the [Desktop] tile from the Start screen and find the downloaded file in the [Downloads] folder by using Explorer.
Step 2: Update the firmware of your camera
- Close all currently running programs on your computer.
- Double-click the [Update_NEXF3V101.exe] file you downloaded to start up the Firmware Updater. The Firmware Updater window will appear.
Click to enlarge - According to the instruction on the Firmware Updater window, select Menu --> Setup --> USB Connection on the camera, and check if Mass Storage is selected.
If another mode than Mass Storage is selected, please select Mass Storage. - Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable, the LCD screen of the camera will turn off. Please proceed to the next step.
Note: If the LCD screen of the camera dose not turn off, please try the following methods:- Disconnect the USB cable from the camera, then reconnect the USB cable.
- If there is another free USB terminal on the computer, reconnect the USB cable to this terminal.
- Confirm that the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon
is displayed on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer screen. - If is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
- Click Next on the Firmware Updater window. In the computer screen the following window will appear:

At the same time the message "Follow computer instructions" will appear on the LCD screen of the camera. -From this point don't turn off the camera until the firmware update is completed. - Click Next. The current version and the version after the update appear on the lower left part of the Firmware Updater .

If the current firmware version is 1.01 or later, the update is not required. In this case stop the USB connection and click Finish, turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the camera. - Click Next
- When the following window appears, stop the USB connection by clicking the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon (
) on the task tray at the lower right corner of the computer. However, keep the USB cable connected between the camera and the computer.

Note: If the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step. - Click Next
- When the message Reset camera appears in the camera LCD screen, press the center of the camera control wheel to the reset it. - The LCD screen will turn off.
- Click Next on the Firmware Updater window.
- After resetting, the reconnection of the camera is verified, and the following window appears:
Click to enlarge - Click Run to start the update. The progress bar will appear while updating (approximately for 15 minutes). -don't turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while updating.
- When the update is completed, the following window will appear. Click Finish and disconnect the USB cable.
Click to enlarge - Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack and/or the AC adapter, reinsert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the camera.
Step 3: Confirm the firmware version of your camera is Ver 1.01.
- On the camera select Menu --> Setup --> Version.
- The firmware version is displayed as illustrated below.
