IMPORTANT:

  • You will need to update both the Music Center for PC software and the Walkman firmware to the latest versions in order to improve connection stability. If either are not updated to the latest version, there is a possibility that the Music Center for PC software and Walkman device will not connect properly.
  • The date and time must be set correctly on the Walkman or the update notification may not appear. If they are not correct, set the date and time manually.

Preparation

Check the firmware version

If your Walkman has already been updated to software version 4.02.00, you do not need to perform the update.

  1. Swipe the Home screen upwards.
  2. Tap SettingsSystemAbout device.
  3. The model name and the software version are shown in Model & hardware and Build number respectively.

Before you upgrade

  • Be sure to connect to the network while updating.
  • After updating, the firmware cannot be reverted to an earlier version.
  • After updating, the Wireless playback quality setting in the Bluetooth function may be restored to the default value (LDAC-Connection pref).
  • The Permissions screen may be displayed after the update. If this occurs, follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Transfer all data from the Walkman to the computer, as data which remains on the Walkman may be lost when updating.
  • We cannot guarantee that tracks and data will not be damaged or deleted when performing this update.
  • When updating, the Walkman needs to have about 2 GB of free space. Please check that there is sufficient free space.
  • If there is not enough free space in the built-in flash memory, transfer any unnecessary data back to the computer to increase free space.
  • Make sure the Walkman is in the charging state and has over 60% battery charge left.
  • When installing this file, make sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with administrative rights.
  • The communication cost will be borne by users.

Important notice

For customers using Music Center for PC:

  • To improve the stability of the connection, please update both Music Center for PC and your Walkman device's software to the latest version.
  • If they are not updated to the latest version, your Walkman device may not be able to connect to Music Center for PC.

If the Walkman date and time are not set correctly, the update notification may not appear. Please check that the date and time have been set correctly. If they are not correct, please set the date and time manually.

How to set the date and time

  1. Swipe the Home screen upwards.
  2. Tap the Clock icon to display the current date and time.
    NOTE: If the date and time are correct, the Walkman will display the update notification. If the date and time are not correct, set the correct date and time using the following procedure.
  3. Return back to the Home screen by tapping (home on the Navigation bar) at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Swipe the Home screen upwards.
  5. Tap the menu items in the following order: SettingsSystemDate & time.
  6. If Automatic date & time is on, tap Automatic date & time. Set date and Set time will be clearly displayed below Automatic date & time.
  7. Tap Set date and set to the correct date. Then tap OK to return to the Date & time screen.
  8. Tap Set time and set the correct time. Then tap OK to return to the Date & time screen.
  9. Set Automatic date & time to on.

Download & Install

You can upgrade by either of the following methods:

  • Update via Wi-Fi (wireless LAN)
  • Update by using Music Center for PC

Step 1: Install the update

(1) Update via Wi-Fi (wireless LAN)

By connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi, you can download the latest software to update your Walkman. When new software is released, the update notice will be displayed when the Walkman is connected to Wi-Fi.

  1. Connect the Walkman to a power source.
  2. Turn on the Wi-Fi function to connect the Walkman to the Internet.
  3. Swipe the Home screen upwards.
  4. Tap SettingsSystemAdvancedSystem updates.
  5. Read the message carefully and follow the onscreen instructions to carry out the update.

NOTE: When you try to update the software, you may be required to allow access to the storage. If so, please give permission to access the storage.

(2) Update by using Music Center for PC

Music Center for PC is a PC application for managing contents that can be used with the Walkman. On start-up, Music Center for PC connects to an update server via the Internet and checks automatically for Walkman update information.

  1. Turn off the Wi-Fi function to disconnect the Walkman from the Internet.
  2. Start up Music Center for PC on the PC.
  3. Connect the Walkman to the PC.
  4. The Use USB for dialog will be displayed on the Walkman screen. Tap File Transfer in the Use USB for dialog, then tap OK.
  5. The update notice will be displayed on the PC screen. Read the message carefully and follow the onscreen instructions to carry out the update.

NOTE: If necessary, turn on the Wi-Fi function to connect the Walkman to the Internet.

Step 2: Check the update was successful

After the update, please confirm the new version has been installed successfully by following these steps:

  1. Swipe the Home screen of the Walkman upwards.
  2. Tap SettingsSystemAbout device. The software version is displayed in Build number.
  3. If the Build number is 4.02.00, the update was successful.
