What is a LUT?
A LUT, or Look Up Table, can be used to transform the look of your S-Log3 footage quickly and easily. It can be used to deliver a wide range of creative, stylised looks or to perform a simple colour space transformation.
Benefits
A LUT makes it easy to apply a wide variety of different looks to your video content. It’s often used when shooting RAW or log content, which may initially look quite flat but contains large amounts of information for post-production creativity.
How does it work?
A LUT can be used by either uploading directly to the camera, or by applying to your footage in post-production, depending on your model of camera.
Any Sony Cinema Line camera, and some Alpha cameras with a dedicated S-Log3 mode* such as CineEI or flexible ISO offers the ability to load custom LUTs directly into the camera.
If your camera doesn’t have a dedicated S-Log3 mode but does have an S-Log3 picture profile**, you can still use a LUT to transform the look of your content in post production.
Different types of LUT
Sony’s cameras use 3D Cube LUTs which come in different quality levels. Sony cameras support 33x Cube LUTs as these offer a good balance between quality and processing power. For post-production you can use high quality 65x LUTs. These need more processing power but allow for the most nuanced corrections.
Maximum flexibility
Although LUTs provide a great grading starting point, additional adjustments to the contrast, brightness, or colour may be necessary for the best results. To leverage the full range of your S-Log3 footage any additional adjustments should be made to the S-Log3 material before it is transformed by the LUT. In post-production if working with nodes (e.g., DaVinci Resolve), add the LUT in the final node. Or when using layers (e.g., Adobe Premiere) add it via a global adjustment layer.
Experimentation is key. Don't limit yourself to a single LUT; leverage the wide dynamic range of S-Log3 and explore various creative looks. Our LUT gallery offers a plethora of LUTs for you to try on your next project.
